The church is a triple-aisled basilica in the Ionian style, with Renaissance elements on its outer aspect. It was built in 1577 at the site of an older church dedicated to St Vlasios. The church is nowadays dedicated to Our Lady Spelaiotissa and to St Theodora Augusta, the Byzantine Empress who was responsible for restoring icons to churches following the period of Iconomachy. The relic of the Empress reposes in a silver reliquary within the church. The templum and many icons are of considerable artistic value. On Orthodoxy Sunday, the day devoted to the restoration of icons, a procession is held of the holy relic of St Theodora.
