The Sea
Odysseas Elytis, a Nobel prize winning Greek poet once said that one of the three basic
elements of Greece, is the boat. Indeed, with a boat you can immerse in the essence of the
Greek spirit, the spirit which was shaped through centuries of traveling freely on sea routes,
ages of gazing at the limitless horizon and imagining what is beyond. Or by resting lazily on a
boat swinging on the mild waves in the summer breeze and refreshing in the cool crystal-
clear water beneath.
Yachting and sailing
Corfu and the Ionian Sea around the island, are just ideal for sailing, or leisurely enjoy from a
yacht. The winds for most of the year are smooth, the waters easy and the coastline more
than stunning, in its variety. Small lush coves, ragged cliffs of chalk, sea-sculpted rocks off
the shore, all surrounded by the fabulous inviting water which ranges from deep blue to
turquois, until the sunset sets its surface on fire with glimpses of orange and red shades.
Mountains and hills emerge on the west coast, while small havens and fishing villages are
calling you over for a seductive ouzo in an all-Greek experience.
If you don’t have a boat, you can charter one, if you do, you can rely on Corfu’s competent
boating infrastructure. Corfu hosts the second largest marina in the country at Gouvia Bay,
two smaller ones (with limited services) at Benitses and Paleokastritsa, while you can also
count on two more havens by the Corfu Town (Sailing Club and N.A.O.K.) and three at the
fishing villages of Kassiopi, Agios Stefanos and Petritis (without services).
