world Whale and Dolphin Day: Dolphins in Corfu
July 23 is World Whale and Dolphin Day, a day established to remind us of the urgent need to protect these magnificent marine mammals.
In the Northern Ionian Sea, dolphins and whales are an integral part of the region’s ecological balance. The most common sightings include bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), while sperm whales and beaked whales occasionally make appearances as well.
Many visitors are pleasantly surprised to see dolphins just a breath away from the town of Corfu—between the old harbor and Vidos islet, often in small family groups.
Corfu offers several ways to observe these creatures: on responsible boat trips, by kayak, or even from the shore. It is important that every encounter is guided by respect:
-
Do not approach at speed
-
Avoid loud noises or music
-
Do not feed or interact aggressively
The presence of dolphins around Corfu is a beautiful reminder that we live in a truly blessed place. Let us take care to keep it that way—for ourselves and for future generations.
