Experience one of the most prominent festivities in Corfu!

On the 11th of August, Corfu celebrates the triumphal victory against the Ottomans in the year 1716.

In this anniversary, the people of Corfu honour the persistent struggles of their ancestors to keep the island within the Western Europe, and therefore they had the opportunity to participate in the marvelous phenomena of Renaissance and Enlightenment, which reflects on the local culture.
Traditionally, since the time of the Battle, the Corfiots attributed a share of the victory to the patron Saint, Spyridon, as at a crucial moment of the battle a summer storm deteriorated the situation for the besiegers.

The festivities start in the evening of the 10th of August.
At 21:00 the Philharmonic Society Kapodistrias holds a concert at the south side of the Old Fortress.
At 22:00 pm, with the traditional Varkarola will be held at Faliraki, in the sea area on the northern side of the Old Fortress. It is an event representing the sudden storm which struck the Ottoman Fleet, accompanied by narration in Greek and English and boats carrying choirs singing local songs.

On the 11th of August, a religious procession of St Spyridon’s relic at 09:00 am in the Old Town centre, from the church to the Esplanade and the Old Fortress’ entrance, back to the Liston and the church. The religious processions in Corfu conform a part of the island’s Venetian heritage, and are characterised by magnificence and musicality, as there are many bands and choirs participating.
On the same day, at 21:00 pm, the Philharmonic Society of Corfu holds a concert at the Esplanade, in a tradition which dates back to the 19th century.

On the closure of the festivities, on the 12th of August, at 21:00 pm, the Philharmonic Society Mantzaros, holds an Opera Night at the Esplanade.
