CIVIL MARRIAGE LICENSE – REQUESTED DOCUMENTS FOR ISSUANCE 

GREEK CITIZENS

The necessary documents for the issuance of a marriage license that need to be submitted by each individual (according to Article 1, par. 3 of the Presidential Law 391/1982, and Articles 1350 & 1505 of Law 1329/1983) are the following:

Application (Municipality issues application forms)

Statement stating that:

The bride and the groom don’t have any obstacle for marriage from the ones mentioned in articles 1350,1351,1352,1354,1356,1357,1360 of the civil code.

is a resident of the municipality (central Corfu or Diapontia islands) and

If the mentioned future marriage is the first, second, third etc.

Stamp fee of Euros 15 one of each (the interested can obtain it from a tax office or the Public Fund)

Personal ID or Passport and a simple photocopy of this documents, that remains in our records

Extract of the Birth Certificate from the Registry of the place of birth of the interested person. If said certificate has not been drawn up for one of the two spouses or the records have been destroyed, a certificate of registration must be submitted to the Municipal Register of the municipality of the community to which he/ she belongs. Also is required a certification from the above service that certifies the destruction of the files. For citizens under 18 years old, a Court decision is required for the issuance of a marriage license.

Announcing the wedding on a local daily newspaper and then after the publication a presentation of two copies (one of each) is required, in which the wedding announcement will be published, the place of residence as well.

In case of a divorced individual, the divorce certificate is required or the marriage certificate with the divorce details submitted.

In case of widowhood, the death certificate if required.

Copy of a Tax Clearance or Residence Lease where it appears as a place of residence.

Notification No1

For citizens of the respective municipality who are residents abroad, marriage licenses are issued by the municipality. The supporting documents remain the same as above, while the application and the statement are received, completed and signed by the intereste parties at the nearest Greek Consulate of their residence. These two documents should be sent to an authorized person for further actions.

Notification No2

- Main names and surnames in the applications must be completed in non-capital letters (lower)

For the declaration of the ceremony and marriage at the Registry necessary please be notified that are requested:

Residence address

Religion and dogma

Profession

Citizenship

Education level

Photocopies of Id’s – Tax Number – and AMKA of both spouses.

FOREIGN RESIDENTS ABROAD

Certificate of non- obstruction of marriage from the authority of their country

Birth certificate

Simple photocopy of the passport

Simple photocopy of the legal stay in Greece (residence permit, visa or entry stamp)

In case of divorce, the divorce certificate should be presented.

All the above certificates, copies, as well as the divorce certificate must be translated to Greek.

“Apostille” validation and stamp is required only for those certificated from third countries (non-European)

As official translation is considered:

From the translation service of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs

By an authorized permanent civil servant of the respective Greek Consulate authority of the country of issue.

From a Greek Lawyer, who certifies that he jas sufficient knowledge of the language which he translated

From a graduate translator of the Ionian University.
