Capodistrias Museum

The Capodistrias Museum – Centre of for Capodistrian Studies is the first and only museum

dedicated to the life and legacy of Ioannis Capodistrias, a distinguished European diplomat and politician of the 19th century, whose name is linked with the vision and struggles for peace in Europe and the establishment of the Greek State as he was the first Governor of Greece.

The museum is housed in the heritage monument of Koukouritsa, for centuries a Capodistrias’ family country estate, situated near the village of Evropouli, just 7km from Corfu town. The permanent exhibition displays important artefacts and documents of historical significance, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of the first Governor of Greece. At the Museum’s lush hilltop garden visitors can explore Corfu’s countryside with uninterrupted views over the island. In the garden, visitors can also enjoy the Museum Cafe and various cultural summer events.

The Museum’s history in itself is directly linked with an exceptional figure, that of Maria Capodistria - Desylla, great-granddaughter of the Governor’s youngest brother, and Mayor of Corfu from 1956 to 1959 (she was, in fact, the first woman in Greece ever to be elected to the Mayor’s office). She was very fond of the Koukouritsa estate and envisioned creating there a space that would highlight the legacy of her great ancestor. Thus, she donated the estate to three historical institutions of

Corfu - the Corfu Reading Society of Corfu, the Corfu Philharmonic Society and the Society of Corfiot Studies - in order to establish the museum there. The Capodistrias Museum - Center of Capodistrian Studies was founded in 1981 and, following a major recent renovation, it opened again to the public in 2017.
